Our last events in 2024 were in North Wales. Click here for the Captain’s full Report of the Tour.
On Day 1 a good turnout of 13 JBGS members (some of uncertain fitness!) arrived at a wet and windy Pwllheli Golf Club for a Society team (2 best scores to count) and individual stableford to kick off the North Wales tour. This odd number provided one team with 5 with 2 of the injured easing themselves back to golf by playing alternate holes, and 2 team of 4. On arrival, some were showing their competitive edge with some practice going on, but did it get the desired win?

Robert Arbourne won the individual competition with a fine 36 points, while the dream team of Alison Stanbrook, Alison Darlington, Angela Grant, and K.J. Redman won the team prize (2 best scores from 4) with an impressive 77 points (on a countback, with 46 points on the back nine).
Day 2 saw us Nefyn Golf Club where we were welcomed with 40 mph winds and a threat of heavy rain! In the morning we were due to play the 9 hole Point Course so, it was decided to play a 4-ball scramble.

The triumphant group comprised Paul Melding, Peter Stanbrook, Steve Lawson and Alison Darlington.
Over a well earned light lunch, members of the society contemplated who was going to brave the elements on the 18-hole Championship course in the afternoon, with heavy rain forecast. Most had booked, there was little enthusiasm but 8 brave souls ventured out in 2 teams of 4 to play another scramble format competition. Play was abandoned after 9 holes.

Group 1 going out

At the dinner afterwards, all those who ventured out were rewarded for their spirit although Messrs Horner, Darlington, Jones and Arbourne (Group 2) were acknowledged with having the better score.
Day 3 saw JBGS members playing a match against the members at Porthmadog GC where we were given a very warm welcome on our arrival. Four of the six matches were mixed pairings at the request of the home club, and this made for a very enjoyable (albeit competitive) round of golf despite the Captain and his partner KJ finding themselves playing against a past Welsh National winner.

And the result was a convincing win by Porthmadog GC 5½:½. Well done, what a great time we had, the hospitality was superb, thank you. It was a great finale to our 2024 golf. Keep well and stay safe until we meet again in 2025.
