Highland Tour: The Founding Meeting
In November 1891, a Public Meeting was held in Brora, for the formation of a golf club. After the chairman stated the object of the meeting, the matter having been fully discussed, it was unanimously agreed to form the club known to all as Brora Golf Club. The membership fee was set at the modest amount of Two Shillings and Sixpence per annum. The golf course was originally 9 holes until around 1900, when it was extended to 18 holes. In 1923 James Braid, five times Open Champion and a prolific designer of golf courses, was invited to visit. This he did in 1924 and for the princely sum of £25 plus travelling expenses he submitted plans for a redesigned 18 hole layout. This was largely implemented as he suggested. The course has suffered little change since Braid left it and remains mostly unchanged to this day. It is a classic example of a links course which can be numbered among the designer’s masterpieces and provides a fair and challenging test of true links golf. As the course is grazed every green is protected by an electrified wire fence.
This is the society’s main summer competition. Tee times from 11.00am. The prizes to be played for include the Peter Thomson Memorial Trophy Stableford, the Curate’s Egg and the Captain’s Pink Balls. The entry fee is £85 (£60.00 for members of Brora GC) which includes golf followed by the James Braid Golfing Society dinner at Brora GC.
