SUMMARY:The Highland Tour
DESCRIPTION:Day 1 – 23 June at Golspie GC\, Ferry Road\, Golspie\, KW10 6ST \nDay 2 – 24 June at Fortrose and Rosemarkie GC\, Ness Road\, Fortrose\, IV10 8SE \nDay 3 – 25 June at Royal Dornoch GC\, Golf Road\, Dornoch\, IV25 3LW \nDay 4 – 26 June at Brora GC\, Golf Road\, Brora \, Sutherland\, KW9 6QS \nPlease click on each GC for the link to the club website. \nThe original golf club at Golspie was founded in 1889 – although golf had been played on the links for at least 10 years before then. In 1925 James Braid was invited to survey the course and his report contained detailed suggestions for every hole!  His improvements were completed by 1926 establishing the design for the course’s enduring layout. It is a mix of classic links\, heath and parkland holes with stunning views from all holes of the Dornoch Firth on one side and the backdrop of Ben Bhraggie on the other. It’s a course where links holes lead to heathland with unforgettable pin placements and bunkering throughout. It is a delight to play for all abilities and is the ideal venue for JBGS members to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Society with Golspie members on the 100th Centenary of Braid’s visit to Golspie GC. By lengthening the Backies and Fields to Par 5s the course from the white tees is now 6021 yds and from the reds it is 5343 yds.\nThis is a celebratory match against the club members. Meet at 9.00am for tee times from 10.00am. Match fee £75 (£50 for Golspie GC members)\, to include golf\, after golf drinks and a two-course meal. The match is limited to 16 golfers a-side.\n \nFortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Links is now known to be the 15th Oldest Recorded Club in the World with golf being played along the current 6th\, 7th and 8th holes in 1793. The first evidence of golf being played over Chanonry (now Fortrose) was in 1702. The AGM in July 1793 was arranged in Williamson’s Tavern! In 1932\, James Braid was invited to advise on a new\, extended course layout. In June 1935 a newspaper report noted that ‘The new 18 hole golf course\, laid out by James Braid\, is of great variety and necessitates much skill. It’s sporting character attracts many visitors to the district’. Braid was invited back over the next 2 years to make a fresh survey. His fee was £12.10/-. Under his recommendations\, the course was re-designed and laid out forming the basis of the one in use today. The course is a Scottish Championship venue.\nThis is a match against the club members. Meet at 11.30am for tee times from 1.00pm. The format of the match will be a Fourball Better Ball. Match fee £75 to include golf\, after golf drinks and a two-course meal (jacket and tie). The match is limited to 24 golfers a-side. \nAlthough Dornoch Golf Club was formed in 1877\, golf in Dornoch can be traced back to 1616\, and everyone who came to play marvelled at the wonderful links land and the challenge it presented. The course was then only 9 holes. In 1883 the annual subscription to the club was Two Shillings and Sixpence per annum – the annual income was £9.00. In 1886\, the Club invited the veteran champion golfer\, Old Tom Morris\, to visit and lay out a more fully planned golf course. In 1906\, through the influence of Her Grace the Duchess of Sutherland\, Dornoch Golf Club secured the title and dignity of ‘Royal’ from King Edward VII. The Second World War saw an aerodrome on the Ladies 18 hole course and 4 holes of the Championship Course were lost. Royal Dornoch was the home of the course architect Donald Ross who was also the first golf Professional at the club. Tom Watson is an honorary member of Royal Dornoch and is quoted as saying “It’s the most fun I’ve ever had on a golf course”. December 2025 saw the opening of the magnificent new clubhouse – how exciting it will be for JBGS members to see it in 2026.\nThis is a match against the club members. Meet at 11.00am for tee times from 12.30pm. The format of the match will be a Fourball Better Ball. Match fee £80 to include golf\, after golf drinks and a two-course meal (jacket and tie). The match is limited to 24 golfers a-side.\n \nBrora is recognised as being one of James Braid’s finest pieces of work – the stunning links course offers a perfect balance between challenge and fun – a great test for golfers of all levels. In November 1891 a Public Meeting was held and Brora Golf Club was formed. The membership fee was set at the modest amount of Two Shillings and Sixpence per annum. The golf course was originally 9 holes until around 1900\, when it was extended to 18 holes. In 1923 James Braid was invited to visit in 1924 and for the princely sum of £25 plus travelling expenses\, submitted plans for a redesigned 18 hole layout. This was largely implemented as he suggested\, including a sloping 1st green where it has been said ‘Pin placement can be arranged to ensure 3 putts’. He also made exemplary use of the burns which cross the course and arranged the course so that the 4 Par 3s run N\, S\, E and W. As the course is grazed by sheep and cattle all the greens are protected by electrified wire fences. The course remains mostly unchanged to this day and is a fair and challenging test of true links golf. It is 6211 yds off the white tees and 5273 yds off the reds.\nThis is the James Braid Golfing Society’s main Stableford competition. Tee times from 11.00am. The prizes to be played for include the Peter Thomson Memorial Trophy\, the Curate’s Egg and the Captain’s Pink Balls. The entry fee is £95 (£70.00 for members of Brora GC) which includes golf followed by the Society’s dinner at Brora GC.

SUMMARY:The Kent Tour
DESCRIPTION:Day 1 – 28 April at Walmer and Kingsdown GC\, The Leas\, Deal\, Kent\, CT14 8EP \nDay 2 – 29 April at Littlestone GC\, St Andrews Road\, New Romney\, TN28 8RB \nDay 3 – 30 April at Wildernesse GC\, Park Lane\, Sevenoaks. TN16 0JE \nPlease click on each GC for the link to the club website. \n\nWalmer and Kingsdown GC is perched on top of the world-famous White Cliffs of Dover\, with sea views from every hole. Renowned course designer James Braid created the course in 1909  around the natural landscape ensuring that it maximised the panoramic views in every direction from the unique location. This downland course measures 6471 yards off the white\, and 5835 off the red tees and is eminently playable while offering fascinating challenges for all abilities in truly wonderful surroundings. The course remains mainly as Braid designed it\, the first 9 having magnificent views of the Channel\, and the second 9 looking inland to Kent countryside. This is a JBGS Society day. Meet at 11.30am for tee times from 1.00pm. The event fee is £75 to include coffee and a bacon roll on arrival\, golf and a 2 course meal afterwards. \n\n\n\nGolf has been a fixture at Littlestone GC since 1888. Designed originally by Purves the course was recognized as one of the premier links in the UK. In 1905 James Braid was brought in to place bunkers on what was mostly a bunker-less course. His improvements can still be seen on several holes – the great fairway bunker on the12th and the array of cross bunkers on the16th are fine examples of his work. Braid’s contribution added to Littlestone’s reputation and in 1910 Bernard Darwin in his classic book\, Golf Courses of the British Isles\, richly praises the course. Although in 1924 MacKenzie made improvements the course has remained almost unchanged since then with the exception of some new tees in 1997 to lengthen it. The course is 6453 yds off the white tee and 5600 from the red. The club is a member of the MacKenzie Society and takes pride in furthering the spirit of links golf. This is a JBGS Society day. Meet at 12\,30pm for tee times from 2.00pm. The event fee is £115 to include sandwiches on arrival\, golf and a meal (sausages and mash) afterwards. \n\n\n\nWildernesse GC\, was founded in 1890 and offers warm hospitality\, and a beautiful\, wooded course that demands accuracy and positioning.  Braid visited in 1927 with the instruction to remove the 2 holes over the road – for safety reasons! This he did.  Changes were made in 1954 to move the clubhouse (again)\, which involved carving several new holes out of Chance Wood’. However\, Braid’s course remains almost intact today\, including the 5th – a highly-rated par 3. Wildernesse GC has a proud heritage and offers a very special place for both members and visitors to enjoy the game we love. From the white tees the course is 6539 yds long\, and from the red tees it is 5713 yds. This is a JBGS Society day. Meet at 12.30pm for tee times from 1.40pm. The event fee is £85 to include sandwiches on arrival\, golf and a meal (chilli with rice) afterwards.

SUMMARY:The Shropshire Tour: Hawkstone Park GC
DESCRIPTION:The courses at Hawkstone Park GC were designed in extensive parkland surrounding the ruins of a medieval castle and statues\, with the cliffs of the world-famous 18th Century Follies providing a spectacular backdrop and the Championship course really test all golfers’ abilities. (The Follies is an historic woodland fantasy with cliffs\, crags\, caves\, deep woods and a series of extraordinary monuments built over 200 years.) \nThe first golf was played over a 9-hole course\, opened in 1920\, which was soon followed with another 9 holes. In 1930 James Braid was asked for advice and today the course is little changed after his changes were implemented. \nWith quite severely undulating ground in some place\, inevitably there are a number of blind shots. However. these do not detract from the shot-making values imposed by Braid\, and together with the stunning setting\, remind the golfer that the game is designed for exercise and enjoyment in equal measure. \nThis is a 2 day event\, which includes golf on both the Championship and the Hawkstone Courses. Meet in golf attire at 11.30 am. It is hoped that one of the days will be a JBGS Society day and the other will be a match against the club. The event fee for the 2 rounds of golf\, with dinner\, bed and breakfast at the venue Hotel is £180. (Single supplement £20) Other refreshments at member’s own cost.

SUMMARY:Highland Tour: Match vs Muir of Ord GC
DESCRIPTION:Match vs the club \n“A Scottish gem in James’ Braid’s course design Crown” – Muir of Ord GC is just 11 miles from Inverness. The impressive 18-hole golf course\, with greens set among heathland and moorland\, the course boasts clear views of Ben Wyvis to the north and Beauly Firth to the south. \nNow celebrating 150 Years of Glorious Golf – the story of the Muir of Ord Golf Club is intrinsically woven into the area’s history. The golf course itself is part of the local landscape and is as sought out now by enthusiastic golfers as it was when it’s first nine holes were planned out back in 1875. It was lengthened to a full 18-holes by legendary golf course architect James Braid in 1925. It has changed little over the years – although in 1996 it was extended from 4853 to 5596 yds from the back tees. \nIt wasn’t really surprising that Muir of Ord Golf Club was voted Scottish Golf Club of the Year in 2016. This is a golfing haven that has everything going for it\, from its unique\, challenging course to its convenient location; its friendly\, welcoming members and staff; and its positive associations with some of the golfing greats of past and present. \nThis delightful event\, which is an extra to the Tour this year\, is an honour for the JBGS as we are invited to celebrate The Muir of Ord’s 150th anniversary with their members. This 12 a-side match will be a very special occasion.\nMeet in golf attire at 10.30am – tee times from 1104am. The format of the day is a 4Fourball Better Ball match for ladies and gentlemen against the club. The event fee is £65 to include golf\, after golf drinks and a 2 course meal (jacket and tie). This event is limited to 12 golfers.

SUMMARY:East Anglia Tour: Colchester GC
DESCRIPTION:JBGS Society Day \nFounded in 1907 this tree-lined course was designed by James Braid. Colchester Golf Club’s fast-running\, well established fairways provide a great test of golf. There are around 70 bunkers to catch out any wayward shots and the subtly-contoured greens run fast and slick all year round. What a challenge! \nAn exhibition match between Braid and Taylor was held in July 1910 to celebrate the opening of the revised course after further work was required and Braid was called back. He was called back again in 1935 with S Parmenter after more land became available for further changes\, which still remain. The course measures 6\,320 yards\, par 70\, from the white tees and 5718 yards\, par 73 from the red tees. \nMeet in golf attire at 11.00am. The format of the day will be an Individual Stableford. Tee times from 12.00noon. The event fee is £50 to include golf\, and post event sandwiches. Pre-event refreshments at members’ own cost. Dress code casual.

SUMMARY:East Anglia Tour: Match v Ipswich (Purdis Heath) GC
DESCRIPTION:Match vs Purdis Heath GC \nThe club was founded in 1895 on common land at nearby Rushmere Heath. It was not until 31 years later that the legendary golf course designer James Braid designed the course at Purdis Heath. The official opening of the course took place in June 1928\, with an exhibition match between Braid himself\, fellow founder member of the PGA – J H Taylor\, Abe Mitchell and a talented young golfer by the name of Henry Cotton. \nThe 11th hole regarded as the toughest hole at 531 yds.  It requires a long\, accurate drive for a successful outcome! The course can be regarded as one of Braid’s masterpieces requiring accurate shot-making in a treelined haven of tranquillity. 35 yds shorter than originally it is 6177 yds from the White tees and par 71. \nMeet in golf attire at 11.00am. Pre-match refreshments at members’ own cost. The format of the day will be a Fourball Better Ball match for ladies and gentlemen against the club. Tee times from 12.00noon. The event fee is £65 to include golf\, and a 2-course meal. This event is limited to 12 golfers. Dress code smart casual.

SUMMARY:Highland Tour: The Founding Meeting
DESCRIPTION:In November 1891\, a Public Meeting was held in Brora\, for the formation of a golf club.  After the chairman stated the object of the meeting\, the matter having been fully discussed\, it was unanimously agreed to form the club known to all as Brora Golf Club.  The membership fee was set at the modest amount of Two Shillings and Sixpence per annum. The golf course was originally 9 holes until around 1900\, when it was extended to 18 holes. In 1923 James Braid\, five times Open Champion and a prolific designer of golf courses\, was invited to visit. This he did in 1924 and for the princely sum of £25 plus travelling expenses he submitted plans for a redesigned 18 hole layout. This was largely implemented as he suggested. The course has suffered little change since Braid left it and remains mostly unchanged to this day. It is a classic example of a links course which can be numbered among the designer’s masterpieces and provides a fair and challenging test of true links golf. As the course is grazed every green is protected by an electrified wire fence. \n\n\n\nThis is the society’s main summer competition. Tee times from 11.00am. The prizes to be played for include the Peter Thomson Memorial Trophy Stableford\, the Curate’s Egg and the Captain’s Pink Balls. The entry fee is £85 (£60.00 for members of Brora GC) which includes golf followed by the James Braid Golfing Society dinner at Brora GC. \n\n\n\n\n\nBrora GC\, 43 Golf Rd\, Brora\, KW9 6QS \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNon member/member\n	Non member £85.00 GBP\n	Member £60.00 GBP

SUMMARY:Highland Tour: Match vs Royal Dornoch
DESCRIPTION:Royal Dornoch GC\, Golf Rd\, Dornoch IV25 3LW \n\n\n\nGolf in Dornoch can be traced back to 1616\, and what is certain is that everyone who came to play marvelled at the wonderful links land and the challenge it presented.  In 1877\, Dornoch Golf Club was formed. The course was then only 9 holes long. In 1883 the annual subscription to the club was 2/6 and the annual income was £9.00. In 1886\, the Club invited the veteran champion golfer\, Old Tom Morris\, to visit Dornoch and lay out a more fully planned golf course. In 1906\, through the influence of Her Grace the Duchess of Sutherland\, a good friend to the Club\, Dornoch Golf Club secured the title and dignity of ‘Royal’ from King Edward VII. \n\n\n\nMeet in golf attire from 11.30 am for refreshments at member’s own cost. Tee times for the match from 1.00pm on the Struie Course. The format will be Fourball Better Ball for pairs of ladies or gentlemen against the club. The number of golfers for this match is restricted to 24 a-side. Golf for 12 is also available on the Struie course as needed or requested. Dinner for 60 (max) in the Royal Dornoch clubhouse (jacket and tie). Match fee is £60 and includes golf\, after golf drinks and dinner. This is another very enjoyable and well-contested encounter.

SUMMARY:Highland Tour: Match vs Fortrose and Rosemarkie
DESCRIPTION:Fortrose and Rosemarkie GC\, Ness Road East\, Fortrose IV10 8SE \n\n\n\nThe first evidence of golf being played over Chanonry (now Fortrose) was in 1702. Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Links is now known to be the 15th Oldest Recorded Club in the World with golf being played along the current 6th\, 7th and 8th holes in 1793. The AGM in July 1793 was arranged in Williamson’s Tavern! In 1932\, James Braid was invited to advise on a new\, extended course layout. In June 1935 a newspaper report noted that ‘The new 18 hole golf course\, laid out by Mr James Braid\, is of great variety and necessitates much skill. It’s sporting character will\, no doubt\, attract many visitors to the district’. Braid was invited back over the next 2 years to make a fresh survey. His fee was £12.10/-. Under his recommendations\, the course was re-designed and laid out forming the basis of the one in use today. The course is a Scottish Championship venue. \n\n\n\nMeet in golf attire from 11.30am for refreshments at member’s own cost. Tee times from 1pm. The format of the match will be a Fourball Better Ball for pairs of ladies or gentlemen against the club. Match fee £75 to include golf\, after golf drinks and a two-course meal (jacket and tie). This is a wonderfully convivial match hosted by a most friendly club and played at Fortrose and Rosemarkie GC. The match is limited to 28 golfers a-side.
